Using the iPad to provide better patient care | iStore Online

Dr Giampaolo’s profession is a demanding one. Demanding of his time, his expertise and his ability to multitask on a daily basis. He has always been a fan of technology. So when the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil launched, he immediately began to experiment with ways to incorporate them into his daily operations. He identified specific areas where he needed to save time and do things in a more efficient way and he sought out different apps to help him do this. He also wanted to use technology to give his patients a better service and provide them with more information when he treated them through the use of visual aids. Here are a few ways in which he managed to achieve this -

Generating scripts and filling out insurance forms for patients on the weekends is one task that keeps Dr Giampaolo very busy! It is a requirement to fill out these documents in your own handwriting and so he uses iPad Pro, his Apple Pencil and an app called Docusign which allows him to quickly and easily sign PDF documents and send them back to clients. The best part is that he can do this from just about anywhere.

Dr Giampaolo travels to various congresses around the world on a regular basis and needs to record a great deal of information that is shared at these meetings. Using Apple Pencil has been a really helpful tool for him. Because it works like a normal pen, he is able to easily make notes during the talks and save them in an organised way. The information is valuable to his practice and his patients, so being able to easily refer back to his saved notes on his iPad Pro is of huge importance to him. Penultimate is one of the apps that he loves to use for this specific task.

Working in a hospital means that Dr Giampaolo is constantly on the move. Whether he is seeing patients or visiting various departments in the hospital, he needed ways to make his work more mobile so that he could multitask while out of his office. Using his iPad Pro, he is able to gain instant access to important patient information via the hospital server. This allows him to save time and gives him greater independence in his work. In addition to being able to access information when he needs it, the long battery life on his iPad Pro gives him the peace of mind that he can continue to focus on his work without being worried about not being able to access the data that he needs to make key decisions during the day.

Dr Giampaolo belongs to a group of professionals that meet on a regular basis to discuss new medical knowledge and findings that impact on their fields. A great deal of research is done before sharing at these meetings by reading medical journals. He uses the Liquid Text app which allows him to easily read these journals and summarise the important points. The split screen view on his iPad Pro has also been a really helpful way of reviewing the notes that he has saved from these journals.

Being able to better understand your condition or treatment is something that Dr Giampaolo strives to afford his patients. By using his iPad Pro and a variety of anatomy apps such as 3D Brain as a visual aid, he is able to explain concepts in a way that is easier for patients to understand. He is also able to access scans and results on the spot and go through them with the patients in detail. This has allowed for a much more engaging and informative doctor patient interaction.

“I can’t type very fast so with the Apple Pencil, the ability to write down a note digitally that I know will be stored and saved in the cloud has made my life a lot easier. Nothing gets lost anymore.”

- Dr Dominic Giampaolo

“Scripts usually have to be in your own handwriting and what’s nice about the Apple Pencil, is that works like a normal pen, I can write the script in my own handwriting and sign it digitally. This has been a massive help.”

- Dr Dominic Giampaolo
