How to get the most out of iCloud

It’s time to be one of the cool kids who saves everything “in the Cloud.” We’re going to explain how iCloud works and how you can be use it to your advantage.

First thing’s first. What is iCloud?

iCloud is an online service from Apple that makes managing your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and iTunes easy. It is designed in such a way that you don’t need a Mac or Windows PC to activate or setup your devices. You can simply turn on your iPad or iPhone, log in with your Apple ID, and start setting up a new device or restore your current one from a previous iCloud backup.

So, how do you set up iCloud?

When you upgrade your iOS or start using an iPhone for the first time, you will be asked if you want to use iCloud Drive to store your data. Tap "Yes," and let’s get started. Launch the Settings app from your Home screen > Scroll down and tap iCloud > Then Tap iCloud Drive. and swipe to switch iCloud Drive on. Now repeat this process on all iOS devices you want to sync with iCloud.

It’s slightly different when setting iCloud up on your Mac. When you upgrade your Mac operating system or start using a Mac for the first time, you will be asked if you want to use iCloud Drive to store your data. Click “Yes”. Now, click on the Apple icon () in the top left corner of your screen

> Click on System Preferences from the drop-down menu

> Click on iCloud

> Enter your Apple ID and Password

> Then Sign in

> Click the checkbox next to Use iCloud for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, and Safari

> Click the checkbox next to Use Find My Mac

> Click Next > Click Allow when prompted to allow Find My Mac to use the location of your Mac

> Enter your Apple ID password to set up iCloud Keychain

> Click Request Approval to confirm approval from one of your trusted devices (iPhone, iPad, or another Mac)

> Enter your Apple ID password on the trusted device (iPhone, iPad, or another Mac).

Some handy tips and tricks

The more you use iCloud, the more you’ll ask yourself, where has iCloud been all your life! Here are a few pointers and suggestions regarding how to make the most of Apple’s vast cloud storage utility.

Check your storage usage

If you’re wondering how much of your free 5GB of storage you’ve used, you can have a quick look. Tap Settings > iCloud > Storage. Your total and available iCloud storage will be visible at the top of the Storage page.

Mac users can view their available iCloud storage by selecting System Preferences > click iCloud > then click Manage

Share your calendar

Sharing and syncing calendars with your iCloud-enabled devices is cool, but sharing your schedule privately or publicly with others is even cooler. Here’s how you do it:

Open the Calender app > tap the Calendars option at the bottom to access your iCloud calendars > tap information right of the calendar you want to share and tap the blue Add Person option below the Shared With section to add people via their email.  Or, toggle on the Public Calendar option at the bottom of the page to allow anyone to subscribe to a read-only version of the calendar.

And what about iCloud and your Apple TV?

The Apple TV isn’t just a cool way to mirror the screen on your iPhone. You can quickly and effortlessly stream content like photo streams, iTunes Match songs or purchases made through the iTunes store, by turning on the device and entering the Apple ID tied to the account.

What if you run out of free storage?

When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of storage. Your purchased music, movies, apps, books, TV shows, and shared albums don’t count against your free storage. But you may reach a point where you need more iCloud storage. At this stage, you’ve got two options:

•Buy more iCloud storage, starting at 50GB for R14.99 a month.

•Reduce the amount of iCloud storage that you use.

You can buy more iCloud storage from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. When you choose a new storage plan, your existing plan is canceled and you're charged the prorated cost of the larger plan. Your plan is upgraded right away, and the new monthly payment date is updated to reflect the purchase date for the new plan.

You're billed every month for your storage plan unless you cancel by downgrading your plan. You get an email each month to remind you of your upcoming payment.

Here’s how you do it on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

Go to Settings

> [your name]

> iCloud

> iCloud Storage

> Tap Buy More Storage or Change Storage Plan

> Choose a plan, then tap Buy and enter your Apple ID password.

And on your Mac:

Choose Apple () menu

> System Preferences, then click iCloud

> Click Manage in the lower-right corner

> Click Buy More Storage or Change Storage Plan

> Choose a plan, then click Next and enter your Apple ID password.

It may seem complicated, but you get prompted and your device will guide you along the way. Enjoy living up in the clouds, with endless amounts of storage.
